Let's talk about the latest episode here! I thought this was the best episode of the season so far. I was cringing while watching Don at that Life meeting.... also, I was so relieved that he didn't have to give a speech. He might be going to AA meetings with Freddie before long.
So, Don lied to get his foot into the door at Sterling Cooper? That's how I took that ending and it was hilarious. Oh, and what about that art director Peggy was stuck with? The guy was a sociopath.

"Tryptic the art term as in 3 pieces that make up one artistic whole. 3 panels of one painting etc. I always thought that was one part of the many things MM is about, a flowing or interweaving exploration of those 3 as one of a central basis of it all. " Oh, I see, they're spelling it differently in Wikipedia. They spell it "Triptych" instead - not to say the alternate spelling isn't valid - I wouldn't know.

"Me too!! I don't ever remember him appearing uncomfortable before." Heh, even my husband was shouting, "That's right, Don! You squirm in your seat, you jerk!" I felt so bad for Allison, but then I totally sided with Peggy for being upset by the implication that she had been one of Don's conquests. Peggy works so hard and they probably all gossip about how she slept her way to the top. Peggy will find way more happiness with her new counterculture friends, I think. Oh, if Kinsey could see her now, hanging out with Warhol Factory types...

I wonder if we can say that Don loves Anna unconditionally, there are things Don has not told Anna. He didn't tell Anna that after he rejected his brother he killed himself, he only told her about rejecting him. She believes to know everything about him, but she doesn't.
Nonetheless, Anna is like the mother he never had, spiritual, but not religious, apparently free of judgment. I wonder if we will learn more about their relationship. Was it ever romantic?
BTW, Dr. G should have been a pediatrician.

"Totally out of the blue the other day, I got to thinking about Pond's advertising prior to the 60s. For some reason the phrase "she's engaged, she's lovely, she uses Ponds" came to mind. I did a little research, and guess what I found?

So now we can see Freddie was going back to the 40s with his ideas!
" LOL! That's hilarious! I'm sure they do plenty of research for the show and dug that one up. Wow, he's 20 years behind?

I disagree about Betty--I think that seeing her lost in an adult world is wrong. That was the era--women were mothers and housewives --for the most part-at home. I know my own mother was. I feel sorry for her--and her children and wish Don would get his butt kicked!!

It's always annoying when a show makes a reference to something and then explains it, thinking their audience is too stupid. At the moment I can't remember Mad Men ever doing that.

Mad Men is heading into 1964 (we already know that the old Sterling Cooper will be absorbed by McCann on 1/1/64).
1964 was a pretty full year: Beatlemania is coming; the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam War, and Space Race are all kicking into high gear; the NY World's Fair is held in Queens, LBJ will face Goldwater in the presidential election.
How do you think these events will impact the characters on Mad Men? What other events of 1964 do you expect to come into play?

I just found out they're starting Season 4 on Thanksgiving weekend, 1964 - so the initial onslaught of Beatlemania will be skipped. But it was still going strong by then - they're no way it won't be part of the show.
They're also skipping over the Goldwater-Johnson election. I'm getting the feeling they want to go right into the heart of the Vietnam/Civil Rights/Counterculture thing - maybe Season 4 will cover several years? That would mean that long hair and all the other style changes will be part of this season.

"As far as predictions go, I'm not sure, but I truly hope that Sal returns for season four. I think it would be both valuable and interesting to explore the lifestyle and difficulties of a homosexual man living in the 1960s.
To me, Mad Men is really about the evolution from an uptight society (the 50s) to a "swinging" society (the 60s). I feel that exploring the homosexuality of a character is key to the plot development of Mad Men. I will be greatly disappointed if Sal does not return. " I agree with you. The origins of the country's gay evolution would offer a fascinating period piece with a direct tie to the politics of 2010. 'From Sal's closet to the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"!! Just as topical then and now, and largely skirted by the Mad Men -- even conspicuously skirted -- is racial discrimination. The show has proved itself stylish, audacious, and intelligent, but is it fearless? Can it stretch its avant garde muscle enough to deliver on its subtle historical hinting? If so, I predict a bold examination of homosexuality and racism wrapped in the appropriately bold Mad Men style as the series approaches the tumult of the mid-60s.... On the other hand, if it continues to hint at, or ignore the obvious, it will be disappointing, but very interesting to observe whether its timidity on the subjects will be masked cleverly enough to be successful... or not. That said, I'm stocking up on popcorn early; I can hardly wait for July 25th!!

"After the season they just had, I think Mad Men has to be a favorite. Not sure how the "politics" among producers shakes out, and it's a very tough field, but wow, how do you not give the nod to Weiner & company after the year they just had?" Award or no. I thank the writers, producers, cast and crew, for resisting the temptation to "dumb down" the stories, dialog, and portrayals as so many, if not most do in the prime time market, in an attempt to garnish a wider audience. Mad Men is proof, that if you produce something of very high quality, a solid percentage of the demographic will reward you with loyalty and appreciation. It also goes a long way in selling, whatever it maybe you sell, on the side. My wife and I enjoy the series immensely, as does our resident teen ager. In terms of appeal, there's a fairly diverce and impressive demographic, right there. If you can captivate that kind of a spread, you've done extreamly well. There's an award in my book.

You get your moneys worth with these. Excellent quality (SD). You'll watch over, and over, and then again with the commentary tracks. They even have different commentary tracks, on many episodes, one for the cast, and another for the writer/producers.
They also have documentary style topical features that give you a perspective on the era.

"It's very possible she is a trophy for Henry, but you would think it would reflect better on Henry if he found a wife without several children. I mean, divorces were pretty scandalous back then, weren't they?
Who knows, maybe she will move in with him and find a creepy shrine to Grace Kelly. " 'but you would think it would reflect better on Henry if he found a wife without several children. " Good analysis. Henry is not himself an elected official, but works for a high profile one. He's not old, but he is borderline conspicously older than Betty. Recall a hollywood movie from that era, "Yours, Mine, And Ours." It starred Lucielle Ball and Henry Fonda, where a widowed pair re-marry for a combination of something like 18 kids. There's a snap shot of the scocial morays of the timeframe. This was the template for the later "Brady Bunch" TV series. I can think of more sublime reasons, kids can be sent off to boarding schools and such. Perhaps he even has issues along the lines of Pete's. That's an alure of the series and the scripts, you can read in as little, or as much as you like, and the limits of your imagination. Overall, those times however, were NOT all that different from today, things (attitudes) were starting to change, and changing fast. A lot of the trends and scocial realities we take for grated now, were set in motion and started then. Interesting about Grace Kelly. She was alive and well back then, and still at the height of her popularity. I wonder if Betts might have, or might be better off, sticking it out with Don ?

Season Three ended with a whole new incarnation of Sterling Cooper -- basically a "Dream Team" comprised of eight core people: Don, Roger, Bert, Lane, Peggy, Pete, Harry, and Joan (no Sal, no Paul, no Ken...). And their current office is a crowded hotel suite.
What are the prospects for this new company? What do you expect to see from them in Season Four? Who else should they hire? What complications lie ahead?

"Regarding complications, first of all, they've got around 6 clients already and only one natural account manager, one copywriter (yes, Don will chip in, but they're still short) and none(!) art directors. Hiring the professionals in all of those fields takes tons of time and the work has to be done now, so unless the writers of the show think their characters live in an advertising fantasy world, there's gonna be trouble. Otherwise... it's a huge blooper.
" Exactly, I look at it from the engineering side of things. Their combined accounts maybe worth something like $ 30 million. Where previously they held that with a staff of what ? Maybe, 50 or 60 people ?

Ok, that was an AMAZING episode. But this part is cryptic to me: What on earth does it mean??? It was amazing to see Peggy's acting in her reaction - do I hear an Emmy?? ____________________________________
Don: "There are people out there who buy things. People like you and me. Then something happened. Something terrible. And the way that they saw themselves... is gone. And nobody understands that. But you do. And that's very valuable." Peggy: "Is it?" Don: "With you or without you, I'm moving on. And I don't know if I can do it alone. Will you help me?" Peggy: "What if I say no? You'll never speak to me again." Don: "No. I will spend the rest of my life trying to hire you."
