1. RE: Episode 4.09 "The Beautiful Girls" Discussion

I mentioned in an earlier discussion how I was tired of Mrs. B being Don's secretary, how it was killing me.......I was serious, but I really didn't expect the writers to have her die at her desk the following episode...geez. Now it just opens the door for them to bring in another young, talented secretary to complicate Don's life even more.

Poor Ida! I am devastated. it's like losing an old friend. Matthew Weiner is so cruel but I love his sick sense of humor. So much happened here, Sally, Dr Faye, Joan and Roger, Peggy and Abe, Bert and Ida, Civil Rights! I don't know how they do it but it seems as if every episode is so chockfull of story! And shot beautifully. I feel like I'm watching top-notch cinema here. My favorite touch was when Bert stopped them from taking Blankenship to the morgue and insisted that they take her to Frank E Campbell funeral home. For those unfamiliar, it is THE celebrity, A-List funeral home in New York. He must have truly cared about her. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Also in writing the obituary for Blankenship, Bert's input-to paraphrase-she was born in a barn and died in a skyscraper-she's an astronaut.I like the perspective the show is beginning to place on civil rights...how businesses viewed it. Do you find this valuable? |

Do you know what was the song when Peggy met Abe in the hall (timing about 13:30 - 14:30). music starts with piano than violins. I have to find it out, thanks!

That was a pretty broad piece of comedy, moving the body, but it seemed to work. Sometimes life really is that absurd, I guess, but I really didn't expect her to keel over at the desk. Ack! Oh, and you're right about the obituary line. Brilliant. Do you find this valuable? |

"Wow, I had no idea. Great catch! That really does say a lot. He seemed visibly shaken by it and not in Roger's "Oh God, I don't wanna die here" way. Do you find this valuable? |

This episode was all about strong women and their relationships to careers and/or men. Joyce (Peggy’s “boy friend”) uses a soup and pot analogy to express the old adage that men run the world but they can not do it without the women. This episode gives a chance to look at how that is working out for some of our favourite ladies.Did you notice how well Poor little Sally mimicked her mothers’ mannerisms? She is pretending she is a woman but really she just wants a hug from her Dad. Faye is smart, sexy and successful but has abandoned motherhood to get there. Jane wants to leave her job and become the wife and mother but circumstances are working against her. I liked that in the final scene, with the three ladies in the elevator, that it was Peggy that was smiling – she’s been getting a hard time lately. I’ll miss Miss Blankenship but I love it that she managed, in death, to give us one more indiscretion! Do you find this valuable? |

"It was broad, but that's worked for them before - I'm thinking of the John Deere incident. They do it in a way that is realistic and not slapstick. I loved Harry's comment using his quilt. You knew it would be a top-drawer place that she (or her estate I guess) wouldn't normally be able to afford. Do you find this valuable? |

Which brings me to my question: Can anyone identify the 2nd song heard playing in the bar scene where Peggy and the guy discuss racism? The first song is "I Know a Place" by Petula Clark, but the following one is some song that sounds like some obscurity by either The Tokens or The Fantastic Baggys, with some Beach Boys type falsetto. That's the one I'm dying to get hold of. Thanks! Do you find this valuable? |

This site is very difficult to access. And now that I finally found the discussion part I find I need help in navigating. Will I get an email when there is another post after post #11 or 12? I will bookmark this page, just in case I lose access. I thought Megan was quietly introduced in this episode as the possible new secretary to Don and also a non-Betty type who might make a difference in Don's life, romantically. She showed compassion to Sally, where Faye was too self-absorbed. I am hoping... I'll miss Blankenship - she added a needed touch of comedy to the show. Her doing the crossword with Bert was priceless. Good job, Mad Men! Do you find this valuable? |
