Episode 4.08 "The Summer Man" Discussion

Another amazing episode! I didn't know how they would top last week but I'm loving journal Don. He really is trying to change. What do you think Betty's look was about when Don was picking up baby Gene? Does she still have feelings for Don?

I think that Betty was looking at Don like he was sad & pathetic. Like she said, "we have everything." Insinuating that Don has nothing. I think she still has feelings for who she thought Don was but this new Don/Dick is a stranger to her. Who knows, she may just end up finding the new Don more interesting now that Henry is becoming more of a wet blanket.

I think she was feeling sorry for him.

So Don is on the wagon!. Now we have the pleasure of watching and waiting for him to fall off. I was amazed to see that he refused sex from Faye - my hero usually cannot get enough. Is this part of the new Don or is he just sticking to his philosophy and not mixing business and pleasure?

The other story was about Peggy and again it was on about Women's Liberation - in this case - sexual harassment. 1964 is the year of the Civil Right Legislation. I'm wondering if there will some exploration of the position of blacks in society in future episodes?

I don't know if it was feeling sorry for Don or remorse over her contempt for Don or just disgust over the entire situation. But I do feel like Don is trying to figure out exactly who he is....who his real friends are and exactly where he fits in with the world around him. If there is one thing his journal is causing him to do, it is to reflect on his actions during the day/week and his interactions with other people.
For example, while swimming in the pool he becomes winded and appears to realize it is caused by his lifestyle and his age. I don't know if he will change or not, but at least he looks like he is becoming cognizant of more than just having a good time.

Well, kind of on the wagon. He was drinking beer instead of whiskey when he was writing in his journal. I guess that's an improvement, lol.

This episode really hit home for me with Peggy and Joan being bullied at work. I have worked in boys club situations like that and it can get out of hand. If you don't play along you really are labeled the "humorless *****." Imagine back in the day when the bosses weren't paranoid about sexual harassment lawsuits. Yikes!

Quite so! In fact we saw him sip a whiskey and a wine as well - but what is the poor guy to do - he doesn't like water!

It's a measure of how low he had sunk that he can drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes and have oral sex in the back seat of a taxi and it still looks like he has cleaned up his act!

I agree that Don is trying to reappraise his life and reverse his decline.
This is because of his blackouts and Anna's death but also he's seen what has become of roger.

I think in opening up to Peggy last week and in her asking him "how long are you going to go on like this?", it was a motivating factor for Don to clean up his act. She is one of the only people who really care about Don's well being.

Ha! So true. I like journal-writing Don way better than Lost Weekend Don.

I think she helped him a lot, too. Of course, he probably also felt he hit rock bottom when Duck Philips nearly handed his ass to him. Seeing Don Draper on the floor with puke on his shirt was so unsettling...

He'll probably never figure that out, as he's spent his whole life in the bubble.

Yeah, but what he was drinking was *practically* water. ;-)

Yes....and he realizes he is becoming someone he doesn't want to be, which is a contradiction of his fake life.....he has always been able to make himself into who he wanted to be.

I pickedup on far better chemestry between Dr. Faye, on the date with Don,
than with Bethany.

However, did you notice the phone booth scene earlier,
with Don semi-eavdropping on Fayes, very animated
rant. No dougbt, she has somekind of mysterious bagage.

"shut up Betty you're drunk"*

I didn't even realize that it was Faye in the phone booth! I was wondering why he even cared to eavesdrop;makes sense now. Here I thought he was just being nosey, lol. Anyway, What do you all think about Bethany's reaction, when Don told her that Betty was his ex-wife. She said something to the effect of "That's your ex-wife?" Her reaction seemed loaded. Like she was surprised that Don had been married to a person like Betty but I'm not sure why. Any thoughts?

I thought it was just because Bethany is basically a younger version of Betty. She probably figures Don won't make the same mistake twice, and will avoid getting too involved with another airhead.

Oh, I don't know, I've been around. I didn't go anywhere. For some reason I just didn't feel like commenting. Maybe I was intimidated by Greg's mammoth posts.

I think she just noticed that for once he wasn't drunk, and had shaved and cleaned himself up. He knew what day of the week it was.
