According to NYMag, AMC may be cutting the show by two minutes... citing... the economy! So.. if it's true, what do you think? And which character should we see less of... ?

AMC Squeezing 'Mad Men' In Season 3"With the Lionsgate TV series Mad Men set to make its Season 3 bow in August on AMC, I'm told there's a big fight leading up to the premiere over, of all things, ads. AMC has told the show's producers to make allowances for another commercial break each hour -- so that'll be two minutes less of actual programming. That might not sound like such a big deal, but it's galling given how well the show has done, how carefully it's put together, and how much money it's already making AMC and parent company Cablevision which recently announced a $20M 1st-quarter profit, while subsidiary Rainbow Media cited a 7.6% increase in ad sales. Naturally, the suits are blaming the bad economy and saying the show simply doesn't bring in enough revenue. Producers are raising a big stink, but it looks like AMC isn't budging. At a time when networks are cutting back on commercial breaks, you've got to wonder why AMC is screwing its golden goose. How can Mad Men compete with premium cable when basic cable is squeezing it for every penny?" 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I think my biggest 'beef' with cutting out 2-minutes per episode is the fact that you lose 26 minutes of story for the whole, that can be used to develop the plot further... I agree that their is a business decision related to this action... and I respect that.... but as a fan I WANT MORE STORY!!!

It's just two minutes from each episode. That's all. I don't think it is anything to get upset over.

'Mad Men' & AMC Settle 2-Minute DisputeAMC and Matthew Weiner have agreed to let the episodes run over into the 11 PM hour so extra commercial time can be added without having to shorten the scripts to accommodate the ads. I was the first to report this problem (AMC Squeezing 'Mad Men' In Season 3). The 3rd season of this Lionsgate TV series premieres August 16th. AMC had told the show's producers to make allowances for another commercial break each hour -- so that would have been 2 minutes less of actual programming. That might not sound like such a big deal, but it's galling given how well the show has done critically, how carefully it's put together, and how much money it's already making AMC and parent company Cablevision (which recently announced a $20M 1st-quarter profit, while subsidiary Rainbow Media cited a 7.6% increase in ad sales). Naturally, the suits blamed the bad economy and said the show simply doesn't bring in enough revenue. But AMC looked foolish for screwing its golden goose. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"'Mad Men' & AMC Settle 2-Minute DisputeI agree with the sentiment that AMC looks foolish for screwing this one up... When your cash cow is producing great results... do not cut it down.. make it longer... Great insight! Do you find this valuable? |

I see what you're saying, Mcdume. This is a carefully crafted show! Asking the writers to shave two minutes off each script is actually a major annoyance, I'm sure.Do you find this valuable? |

The overflow into the next hour was annoying as I was recording the show with my DVR and it stopped recording on the hour, but the show was still going. Just air the show within the normal time slot, for crying out loud! Why are they messing with such a good thing? Do you find this valuable? |

They do it to hold the audience through the half-hour/hour break, hoping they won't switch to the start of another program on another channel.
