Crazy about Mad Men's costume and sets
By: ,
Thursday, 10:25 AM EST
" If you want to see more about me and this new book BOOM! - A Baby Boomer Memoir, 1947-2022 have a look at http://tedpolhemus.blogspot.com/ PS: I'm hoping others will pick up on this discussion about MM's influential (and usually spot on) costume and sets as there are so many interesting things that can't be discussed in one go. Do we think that Don D learned how to wear a suit from Rod Sterling of The Twilight Zone? Discuss" Greetings other Mad Men fans - What would you say if I said that for me the ultimate stars of MM are Janie Bryant the costume designer and Amy Wells the set decorator? For 30+ years I have been writing about style and design and how they are key to understanding what really went on in an era. Although fiction, I find MM a more accurate guide to style and design in the 60s - for example, the traditional style of the 1960 Draper home. The design books focus on modernism but those of us who grew up in the early 60s know this wasn't true in most households. I also love the way that, while so many today equate the 60s with the flower power later 60s, MM shows that this was really two decades rolled into one. My latest book BOOM! - A Baby Boomer Memoir, 1947-2022 has lots of stuff on MM and its extraordinary times. Anyone know how I can contact Janie Bryant and Amy Wells to send them a copy of my new book?

BevAnneS posted the end credits of the episode Wee Small Hours to be Sarah Vaughan. This is incorrect. I'm not sure who it is, but it is a much newer recording and I can attest with absolute certainty that it is not Sarah Vaughan.

I was watching mad men tonight and I was admiring the scotch glasses as I usually do (my dad used to drink scotch, it's why I drink it too). Anyways there is a beautiful/elegant/grandiose glass that Rodger Sterling is twirling on his desk while calling a friend late at night to find work for Joan. It is hard to miss. It is 39 minutes into the episode "The gypsy and the hobo." The shot begins on the glass after cutting from Don crying after confessing to Betty about his old life. Its a very archaic pattern. I can't put my finger on it. But the pattern is gold surrounding the entire glass. Can anyone help me figure out where this stunning glass comes from?

I know I'm a year or so late in watching this, but am new to the show in general.
I'm not usually so moved by television, but I had to watch this episode several times. Then I watched this montage from the episode and balled my eyes out.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f2Of7lXpnU
It feels to me like this is such a penultimate scene in so many ways.
To me, when Anna appeared, she gave the nod of approval to Don for some sort of relationship with Peggy. Definitely a maternal one in a sense. It's heartbreaking to see in a way, her being naturally maternal and needing that outlet after what happened with giving up the baby, and him being so vulnerable and an orphan in one sense, needing the love of a mother figure.
I love the contrast with Peggy and the other women in Don's life leading up to this point. We've never seen him cry in front of any of the others, hardly even Betty? That he can be so vulnerable with her is a huge thing. By the end of the episode, with the 'door open or closed' comment, it's like he may finally be open to the possbility of something with Peggy in the future. The conversation in the diner, about hitting her head against a brick wall is exactly what she has done with Don for years, but finally seems to breakthrough in this episode. (Remember the comment, 'there's a way in/out that we don't know about'.) I also love Peggy's comment about not knowing whether something is good or awful, how this could really relate to Don too.
She truly is the one that he can open up to and who understands him the most, despite not knowing his true identity. They are also obviously mirrors of each other in many ways, even down to their sense of morality. I think that a possible relationship would make sense between these two characters, because they do have a deep bond, based on mutual admiration, respect and intimacy. Great episode.

I see him as a moderate Republican, kind of a Joe Scarborough type, disgusted with the right wing fringe as well as the "hippie liberal" left fringe. He may be apolitical. He finally learns to be true to one woman, but she is 26 and wants kids. He is a grandfather, better at that role than fatherhood. He and Sally are finally speaking. She is still in therapy. Betty dies of lung cancer, and he is sad, but the years have built another kind of wall between them. Don quit smoking years ago and took up swimming and tennis, mostly because the sports advertising accounts, created through the cultivation of associations through membership at an elite health club have saved him financially as well as socially. His son perished years ago, when his sports car crashed into the Lincoln Tunnel, after a night of fraternity party inbibing. It changed Don dramaticaly, but hardened Betty immeasurably. That is my vision of Dod Draper, 2011. Hurry up, March!!!

It dawned on me that the Beatles taking over the 60s music charts and visiting America has been entirely skipped on MadMen. There have been references to the British Invasion (the Rolling Stones were on this week's soundtrack) but zilch about the Beatles. Was this because we would have expected it? (And why not? -- we expected Kennedy's assassination.) Could it be for some legal reason that doesn't allow the Beatles to even be mentioned? Sure, there's too much going on in the 60s world for MadMen to mention EVERYTHING, but you'd think the Beatles would have been there because the show takes place in NYC.

As we now know, Mad Men pretty much skipped 1964 as a whole. So not only are the Beatles M.I.A., but so is opening of the World's Fair, the '64 Olympics, and everything else that happened that year. What gives? 1964 was a watershed year in our culture: it was when things stopped looking like the '50's and started becoming the '60's, and what better show to illustrate that than Mad Men. I think the writers missed a major opportunity here.

Hi there,
I'm doing a project for a marketing class I am studying and I wanted to base it on Mad Men. As part of this I'm trying to find a scene from the show where a client is briefing Don and the gang about what they want - all I can find so far are scenes of Don pitching his ideas back to clients.
I'm wracking my brain trying to think of whether there were any such scenes but can't remember. Can anyone help me? Ideally something with the client coming in going we want X, Y and Z and then Don getting the team to work.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
CCD

I have been a fan since episode one of season one because this show is different than anything else on TV. However, I detected something in last night's episode that I hope is not shapes of things to come. Up until now the language used has been relatively clean, and I like that. In my opinion, profanity is a sign of a lack of intelligence, vocabulary, and imagination. Last night a word beginning with the letter "s" was used at least three times in this episode. Is Matthew Weiner attempting to portray the '60s as a revolutionary time through the use of this kind of language? I certainly hope not. Weiner can successfully create an accurate vision of the '60s without stooping to this level and thereby compromising the quality of this truly fine show.

I absolutely agree with you. I think you can write a great screenplay/ teleplay without having to use profanity. So many wonderful movies have been made without needing to use language that was offensive. If you start to put in the "S" word or the "F" word then it takes away the quality of the show.
