It dawned on me that the Beatles taking over the 60s music charts and visiting America has been entirely skipped on MadMen. There have been references to the British Invasion (the Rolling Stones were on this week's soundtrack) but zilch about the Beatles. Was this because we would have expected it? (And why not? -- we expected Kennedy's assassination.) Could it be for some legal reason that doesn't allow the Beatles to even be mentioned? Sure, there's too much going on in the 60s world for MadMen to mention EVERYTHING, but you'd think the Beatles would have been there because the show takes place in NYC.

As we now know, Mad Men pretty much skipped 1964 as a whole. So not only are the Beatles M.I.A., but so is opening of the World's Fair, the '64 Olympics, and everything else that happened that year. What gives? 1964 was a watershed year in our culture: it was when things stopped looking like the '50's and started becoming the '60's, and what better show to illustrate that than Mad Men. I think the writers missed a major opportunity here.

Mad Men - Briefing Scene?

Hi there,
I'm doing a project for a marketing class I am studying and I wanted to base it on Mad Men. As part of this I'm trying to find a scene from the show where a client is briefing Don and the gang about what they want - all I can find so far are scenes of Don pitching his ideas back to clients.
I'm wracking my brain trying to think of whether there were any such scenes but can't remember. Can anyone help me? Ideally something with the client coming in going we want X, Y and Z and then Don getting the team to work.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Many thanks,
CCD

Using "s" word lame attempt to portray '60s as transformational decade

I have been a fan since episode one of season one because this show is different than anything else on TV. However, I detected something in last night's episode that I hope is not shapes of things to come. Up until now the language used has been relatively clean, and I like that. In my opinion, profanity is a sign of a lack of intelligence, vocabulary, and imagination. Last night a word beginning with the letter "s" was used at least three times in this episode. Is Matthew Weiner attempting to portray the '60s as a revolutionary time through the use of this kind of language? I certainly hope not. Weiner can successfully create an accurate vision of the '60s without stooping to this level and thereby compromising the quality of this truly fine show.

I absolutely agree with you. I think you can write a great screenplay/ teleplay without having to use profanity. So many wonderful movies have been made without needing to use language that was offensive. If you start to put in the "S" word or the "F" word then it takes away the quality of the show.

Peggy's Intoduction to the Office

When Peggy joins the firm as a secretary, sexism is rampant, though it is clear from the start that she is not one of those women (like Joan) who has learned to prosper and even thrive in a sexist world. As Joan mentions, the best possible outcome for Peggy in a few years would be for her to be living in the country and not have to work at all -- in other words, to be well married. To that end, everyone keeps advising Peggy to show off her ankles, stop dressing like a schoolgirl. No one seems to be able to imagine that she might want a job like Don Draper's. It is almost strange that she and Joan get along so well -- remember Joan introducing her to that intimidating technology -- the typewriter? But Peggy really gushes to Joan about how helpful she has been -- but I detect that it IS gush, not totally sincere.
Many people seem to regard Don Draper as the ultimate bad guy, but when he defends Peggy against Pete Campbell's disrespectful attitude we see him in a very positive light. Speaking of which, I can't really see Peggy's acceptance of Pete as lover so abruptly when he shows up drunk at her door. I suppose this is a message about Peggy's determination to run her life as she chooses.

Not sure where EasyEdit is located, but for this section, one of the scenes I found revealing was when the Draper kids are playing in the house. The daughter has a plastic dry cleaning bag over her head and when Betty asks her to, "come here." you think she is going to warn her about possible suffocation, she is more concerned with whether or not her dry cleaning is ruffled. Apparently those warnings came out much later.

Actor Jared Harris is best known these days for his role as no-nonsense English businessman Lane Pryce on AMC's acclaimed Mad Men. But his roles in two new genre films are sure to make him as popular with film geeks as he is with TV addicts. Harris plays Dr. Stringer, the cool, mysterious man in charge of John Carpenter's The Ward, and he'll soon star in one of the year's biggest films -- director Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, the sequel to Ritchie's first hit Sherlock Holmes. Harris's role in the latter is a particularly plum one, as he'll portray perhaps the most famous villain in all of literature, Holmes arch-enemy Professor Moriarty. I spoke with Harris yesterday. Find out what he had to tell me about his work in both films after the jump.

I am new to the group and wanted to take the opportunity to tell the group how disappointing the German version of Mad Men is.
I am American however I have been living in Germany for quite a while now. The German channel ZDF Neo just picked up Mad Men which is synchronized into German. It's a tough watch. The Germans, or rather non-Americans cannot understand the nuance of the period or feel a vicseral attachment to all the products, the clothes, the language ect. Anyone here, I suppose, understands what I mean.
From my birthplace in the Bronx to my new hometown in Berlin - sending all of you greetings wearing a vintage Hart Schaffner & Marx suit....

hey people,
I hope someone can help me out here. half way through the episode, don joins the party and Concierto De Aranjuez by Miles Davis is played - RIGHT after that, there's another jazzy track, I guess some fusion jazz, with a guitar playing. I need to know what track this is! I only found Rinky Dink and Chubby Checker on the net! and I'm not sure whether this track is on sketches of spain, though I doubt it ..
thanks a lot in advance!
